Sing Me a Classic Song Sunday, posted on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, highlights two songs with similar themes. Today’s comparison is Runaway by Del Shannon and Runaway by Bon Jovi.
Both songs tell the angst-ridden, full-of-regrets lamentation regarding a girl/woman who has run away for unknown reasons. The narrator is haunted by unanswered questions stemming from a brokenhearted need to understand.
Del Shannon’s Runaway was an immediate hit, and it reached Number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 song list in 1961. The song is on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time*.
Jon Bon Jovi recorded Runaway in 1981 before “Bon Jovi” was born. The song saw a revision and was released to radio in 1983**, and it went on to become the band’s first Top 40 hit in the U.S.
Until next time,

One of my all time faves, no matter who does it. Love this idea for a blog!
I love both songs, but Del Shannon’s version is my favorite of the two.
