Chicago Lightning is a romantic suspense novel that begins with the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago on February 14, 1929 and ends around midnight two days later in Five Points, New York City.

Release Date – February 10, 2021

  • First motel (from Motorists Hotel) opened in San Luis Obispo, California – $1.25 per night.

  • Chicago: Sears Roebuck opened its first store (it began as a mail-order catalogue in 1889).
  • Nashville, Tennessee: Grand Ole Opry began broadcasting over radio as the “WSM Barn Dance”.

1926

  • “Great Miami Hurricane” – Category 4 hit Miami on September 18th
  • Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel.
  • Hirohito was crowned Emperor of Japan.
  • Henry Ford implemented the 40-hour work week.
  • Harry Houdini died.
  • U.S. – high school students took the first 1st SAT college admissions test
  • Chicago: gangster ‘turf wars’ began. Al Capone soon became a household name.

1927

  • Charles Lindbergh flew The Spirit of St. Louis, solo, across the Atlantic Ocean nonstop.
  • The Ford Model A car was revealed. Price range: $500 to $1200.
  • Peace Bridge Grand Opening Ceremony for the bridge connecting Canada and the U. S. was held.
  • “The Jazz Singer” debuted. 1st film with synchronized dialogue. Ushers in end of silent films.
  • Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) was created as a radio network.

 

1928

  • Mickey Mouse appeared in Disney’s animated short, Steamboat Willie.
  • The Yo-yo Manufacturing Company opened in Santa Barbara, California.
  • St. Francis Dam collapsed near Los Angeles, California.
  • U.K. – Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.
  • U.S. – Iron lung was invented.
  • France: home pregnancy test developed (results in 48 hours)

1929

  • Chicago: St. Valentine’s Day Massacre
  • Vatican City gained independence from Italy.
  • 1st Academy Awards: 15 minute ceremony hosted by Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. – 12 awards given – 1st Oscar went to the silent film “Wings”.
  • Cartoon character Popeye the Sailor appeared in the “Thimble Theater” comic strip.
  • 1st car radio was made by Motorola.
  • Soft drink 7-up was invented.
  • Wall Street Crash – Black Tuesday, October 29th – Great Depression was hot on its heels…
