Today’s comparison is a classic country song and a classic rock song.
A Thing Called Love by Johnny Cash
and
Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen.
Both songs tell of how love sneaks up and blindsides us. Then once we get a taste of love, we’re hooked, and we can’t imagine living without it. These songs show us the wonder and angst, heartbreak and exhilaration, hope and hopelessness that makes up this thing we call love.
A Thing Called Love was written and originally recorded by Jerry Reed in 1968. While the song was a hit for Jerry, it became a bigger hit with Johnny Cash’s rendition, which he released as a single in 1971. His album of the same title was released in 1972.
Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie Mercury in 1979. The song is on Queen’s 1980 album, The Game, and also on their 1981 Greatest Hits album. The song reached Number 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1980. According to some sources, Freddie Mercury wrote the song while taking a bath, and that the song is his tribute to Elvis Presley. The song has been covered by several artists.
